Toast Etiquette
The following are some suggestions for giving or receiving a toast:
- Never drink or stand up, when a toast is being offered to you. However, always stand up and respond to the toast, even if this means just saying thank you.
- A toast should never be offered to the guest of honor until the host has had the opportunity to do so. If it appears that the host has no intention of offering a toast, quietly request the host's permission to do so yourself.
- You should always stand when offering a toast unless it is a small informal group. Standing can help you to both get the audience's attention and quiet them down. It is best not to signal for quiet by tapping on a glass. You could easily end up with nothing to toast with.
- It is not a good idea to insist that someone make a toast. Many people are very uncomfortable with any type of public speaking.
- Never refuse to participate in a toast. It is, however, perfectly acceptable, to participate with a nonalcoholic beverage.
For the toasting at the rehearsal dinner you might follow this order:
The best man toasts the bride
The bride toasts the groom
The groom toasts the bride's mother
The bride's father may toast the groom's parents
